Topic

As we enter post-Christian America, the challenge of proclaiming the Gospel of Je-sus Christ gets harder each day. More than ever, congregations need to find crea-tive ways for pastor and people to work closely together, combining the strengths of the office of the ministry and the priest-hood of all believers effectively.

Conflict, miscommunication, and lack of clarity regarding both the role of pastors and the role of laity distract us from the churches central calling: the Gospel. Are there ways for pastors and people to work more closely as “partners in the Gospel?”

Paul ... 3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:3-6, ESV)

We welcome to our district gathering our keynote speaker, Dr. Stephen Lien, former Pastoral Coordinator for our national body, LCMC. Pastor Lien brings many years of experience assisting pastors and people to work more closely together, both as the former Pastoral Coordinator for LCMC and as a pastor himself. Steve Lien, who resigned last August as LCMC Coordinator for Pastoral ministry, is now the Pastor for Growth Ministries at Victory Lutheran Church, Mesa, Arizona. Pastor Lien grew up in New York City, graduated from High School in (Willmar) Minnesota, and went to Bible School, college and seminary in Seattle and Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. He has served as Associate and Senior Pastor in large and small congregations in South Dakota, Texas, Iowa, and California. His background includes a Doctor of Ministry degree focused on organizing and leading congrega-tions for ministry in the 21st Century. He has also received consultant training, and is certified in Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Pastor Lien and his wife, Joanne, have three grown children and nine grandchildren. He enjoys laughing, running, biking, reading and pontooning with the grandkids at their lake home. Steve has a passion for the health and well-being of pastors and congregations, and he looks forward to sharing what God lays on his heart about our partner-ship in the Gospel.
